All teachers should know about thisโฆ
โ
โ
Most instructors default to one or two teaching styles: they say what to do (auditory), or show what to do (visual). But when you're teaching a full class, that leaves a lot of students hanging. Humans learn three ways: hearing, seeing, and doing, โ thatโs auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning.
โ
โ
Scientist Walter Barbe coined this the VAK Model in the late 1970โs.
โ
โ
Personally, I learn best from seeing, so you can explain all you want how something works, but until I see it in action, it doesnโt really stick.
โ
โ
So hereโs the kicker: If you only โshowโ a drill, โ thatโs visual only. If you only tell , thatโs auditory only. When youโre teaching a class, you need to hit all three.
โ
โ
Hereโs how to instantly get your team to upgrade their teaching on the mat:
Show it: Visual learners need to see the movement clearly. Demonstrate it from all angles.
โ
โ
Explain it: Auditory learners want detail. Talk them through each step: where the foot goes, how the elbow aligns, what to feel in your muscles.
โ
โ
Get them doing it: โ Kinesthetic learners need to feel it. Guide their movement: place your hand on their elbow to tuck it in, help correct their stance by moving their foot.

โ
โ
Why it matters: when you combine seeing, hearing, and doing, you reduce confusion, accelerate understanding, and build confidence. Instead of a guessing game, you're creating clarity, and students who โget itโ fast. Whether your student is a white belt or black belt, no one likes feeling dumb.
โ
โ
This is something you can easily implement this week.

Iโve put all this into a one-page doc you can use as a guide to help you train your staff at your next team meeting. Want it for free? Comment โgood stuffโ and iโll send it over to you.
