𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?

Because keeping students isn't just about what happens on the mat. I wish it were that easy.

There are tons of talented instructors out there who still struggle to keep their students coming back.

Why?

Because retention isn't about perfect technique or the latest curriculum, it's about creating an experience students feel like they can’t quit.

Think about it.

It's way easier (and cheaper) to keep students than to constantly grind for new ones.

Plus, who likes a revolving door of white belts?

​

​

​

If you want to build a strong, loyal student base, you need a few key ingredients:

✅ Great classes

✅ Flexible schedule

✅ Clean and safe training area

✅ Visible student progress

And the one most people overlook: social connection.

And no just social connection with their instructor, but with their classmates. This is even more important.

Here's the thing: students are willing to quit on a business.

But quitting on a friend? That's much harder.

So how do you make sure your students build those friendships?

At our school, we like to run two events every month, each with its own purpose:

1️⃣ One for generating revenue

2️⃣ One for retention

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: A paid board-breaking workshop

​

​

𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: A free movie night for students, watch Kung Fu Panda and have popcorn. 

​

​

​

Retention events don't have to be long or expensive.

​

​

​

They can be as simple as a board game night. Maybe these days ipad night might be better, but you get my point. 

​

​

​

The goal? Give students a chance to just hang out and connect.

​

​

​

With parents cramming their kids' schedules tighter than ever, creating space for social time is becoming essential.

​

​

​

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲:

​

Host a free holiday party in December.

​

​

​

No curriculum. No testing. Just snacks, games, and maybe a little friendly competition.

​

​

​

Students bring their families. Parents chat while kids play. Everyone leaves feeling like part of something bigger than just "the dojo down the street."

​

​

​

And when January rolls around and life gets busy? Those friendships keep them coming back.

​

​

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀:​

✔️ Students feel connected to their peers, not just the instructor.

✔️ Parents meet other families and start forming their own friendships.

✔️ Your school becomes a community, not just a place to drop off kids.

And when students (or their parents) feel like they belong to a community, they don't quit, because quitting isn't just about leaving classes anymore, it's about leaving friends.
