Introducing: The โInjury Intercept Protocolโ
Every martial arts school has that moment...
A student falls, stubs their toe, twists their ankleโฆ or claims they got stung by an imaginary bee and needs to lie down for the next 45 minutes. (if you teach 3 year olds, you know what iโm talking about)
Now what?
If your plan is to just โfigure it out when it happens,โ thatโs not a plan. Thatโs a liability.
Best case scenario? You end up with a bad review
Worst case scenario? A lawsuit.
Thatโs why we use the Injury Intercept Protocol.
Hereโs how it works:
1๏ธโฃ Always have 2 instructors on the mat.
One to lead the class. One to step aside if needed.
(Yes, even if the second is a junior instructor or assistant, they need to be capable.) Someone should be available to take over at any moment in case something happens.
2๏ธโฃ Have a first aid kit.
Neosporin, Band-Aids, gloves, alcohol wipes.
Itโs under $50 on Amazon. No excuse not to have this.
3๏ธโฃ Use working cameras.
If you have security camerasโฆ it better not be from 2014. And they better actually work. Security cameras are cheaper than ever
4๏ธโฃ Get an AED machine.
$500โ$1,000 could save a life. Replace pads regularly.
5๏ธโฃ Keep an โInjury Report Binder.โ
Date, student, what happened, who witnessed it.
And always say:
โWould you like us to call an ambulance?โ
(Even if you donโt think itโs necessary. Just offer.)
Martial arts is physical. Injuries happen.
But schools that prepare look professional.
Schools that wing it look negligent.
โHope and pray northing happensโ isnโt a plan, itโs irresponsible.
Be the leader your school and community needs you to be, by being prepared.
