Being the boss is overrated, try this instead

Are you leading your team like a coach or just bossing them around?
If you feel like your team doesnโt listen, doesnโt improve, or only works hard when youโre watching, thereโs a good chance youโre managing them instead of coaching them.
And thatโs a problem.
Because people donโt want a boss. They want a coach, someone who pushes them, challenges them, and actually invests in their success.
In the book Trillion Dollar coach, Bill Clampbell says
โYour title makes you a manager. Your people make you a leader.โ
Think about your best martial arts instructor growing up.
Did they scream orders at you like a drill sergeant? (ok, maybe sometimes lol)
Or did they inspire you to want to get better?
The best leaders do 3 things:
โ They challenge you without crushing you.
-
A coach doesnโt say, โWhy do you keep messing that up?โ
-
They say, โHereโs what youโre doing well, now letโs push you to level up.โ
โ They make success feel like a shared mission.
-
Instead of โYou need to get better at teaching kids' classes,โ
-
Say, โOur goal is to make kids LOVE martial arts. How do we do that better together?โ
โ They make people WANT to improve.
-
A boss says, โYou HAVE to memorize this curriculum.โ
-
A coach says, โIf you master this, youโll be an even better instructor and a bigger leader in this school.โ
Hereโs your action step for the week:
Next time you give feedback to a team member, ask yourself:
-
Am I telling them what to do, or am I guiding them to improve?
-
Am I making them feel like a robot, or am I making them feel like a leader in the making?
If you want a team thatโs loyal, engaged, and constantly improving, stop being their boss.
Be their coach.
