How to stop students from quitting using peer pressure (the good kind)

Ever had a student vanish overnight?
One week, theyโre training hard. The nextโฆ crickets. Their class card is collecting dust, and they stop responding to your texts.
What happened?
They didnโt quit because they stopped liking martial arts. They quit because they didnโt feel needed.
See, people stay committed to things when they feel like they belong.
James Clear talks about this in Atomic Habits. He says:
โWe donโt choose our habits as much as we imitate the habits of those around us.โ
Itโs why CrossFitters treat their gym like a second family.
Itโs why people show up to church every Sunday.
Itโs why martial arts nerds keep reading my newsletter.
Social pressure keeps people from quitting.
Hereโs how to use it in your school:
โ Make them part of a tight-knit group.
-
Pair students up as training partners and tell them itโs their job to make sure their partner succeeds.
-
Promote students in small groups so they build bonds through shared challenges.
-
Encourage parents to connect, because when the parents have friends at your school, they wonโt want to leave either. Do this by facilitating conversations.
โ Turn quitting into breaking a social contract.
-
If a student is absent for some time, donโt just text them, have their training partner reach out.
โ Celebrate group achievements, not just individual ones.
-
Instead of just saying โCongrats, Sarah, on earning your yellow belt!โ say, โShoutout to our entire beginner class, every single one of them leveled up this cycle!โ
-
This shifts the focus from "me" to "we", reinforcing that their success is tied to their group.
Bottom Line:
If you make students feel like part of a community, they wonโt quit. Heck, thatโs probably the same reason you still do martial arts.
Theyโll stay because they donโt just train at your school, they belong there.
โWhen you join a group, your identity starts to shift. The closer you are to people who do something, the more likely you are to do it yourself.โ โ James Clear, Atomic Habits
