If You Don't Have This In Your Classes, It Will Hurt Your Retention
Ever heard of the SSL Method?
I got this from Dave Kovar, and itโs one of the simplest, but most powerful retention tools for your school.
Hereโs the deal: If your students arenโt Sweating, Smiling, and Learning every time they come to classโฆ Then theyโre not coming back for long.
Letโs break down how you can actually make this happenโฆ
1) SWEATING
This should be obvious, but too many martial arts classes donโt get the blood pumping.
Iโm not saying turn every class into a David Goggins Navy SEAL bootcampโฆ
But at minimum, make them break a sweat.
Sweating releases endorphins and it makes people feel like they accomplished something. And letโs be honestโฆ nobody brags about an easy workout.
Ever met someone who does CrossFit? Of course you have, because they told you within 2 minutes.
Thatโs the point. People talk about tough workouts.
If your class feels like a stroll through Target, donโt expect them to refer a friend. Get your students sweating early and often.
2) SMILING
Unless youโre running a boot camp for Spartans, your students are here to have fun.
How do you know theyโre having fun?
Theyโre smiling.
Fun doesnโt mean chaos. It means creative drills, partner work, energy, and connection.
I once took a class where the instructor looked like he hated being there, no fun, no energy, no smiles.I couldnโt wait for it to be over.
Even pro athletes know this. When Steph Curry was in a slump, hereโs what Steve Kerr told him:
โJust go out there and have fun. Thatโs when you play your best.โ The same goes for your students, whether itโs kids or adults.
3) LEARNING
People want to feel like theyโre improving. Period.
Yes, everyone needs to drill the basics, LeBron still practices free throws. But your students need to walk away thinking, โI got better today.โ
That doesnโt mean cramming 15 new techniques into one class. In fact, thatโs a mistake. Students feel overwhelmed, not accomplished.
Instead, focus on one clear takeaway per student, per class. A single โaha!โ moment goes a long way.
If your students are Sweating, Smiling, and Learning
Then youโll have:
โ๏ธ Better retention
โ๏ธ More referrals
โ๏ธ And a school people rave about
When you are designing curriculum and preparing a lesson plan, think about whether your plan hits each part of the SSL Method.
Because if you do, you will have a martial arts school that your students brag to their friends about.
