One Sharpie Trick to Keep Students Training For Years

Let me ask you a question...

How long does it take to get a high school diploma?

Everyone knows the answer, 4 years.

Same with college. Even if some students take a victory lap, there’s still a general expectation. “I’m class of 2028,” they say proudly.

So why don’t more martial arts schools do the same thing?

Martial arts is one of the only year-round activities. But too often, students and parents don’t have clarity on how long the journey actually is.

It becomes “just another activity” between baseball season and dance class.

Let’s fix that.

Here’s one simple strategy that instantly improves retention AND teaches students about long-term goal setting, it’s called the Black Belt Countdown! 

Here’s what ya do.. 

📌 Write the Black Belt target date directly on the student’s belt.

Simple Sharpie. Nothing fancy.

If they started training in 2025, we write “Black Belt: 2028.”

Now it’s real. Now they have a long-term goal they can visualize every time they tie their belt.

Even better?

You can reinforce this with short-term goal reminders too. When a student earns yellow belt, let them know their next test is in 3 months (or whatever time frame you use)… and their black belt is still on track.

This gives them something to aim at, both near and far.

And yeah, I know… the date won’t always be 100% accurate.

Some students accelerate quickly. Some take longer.

But guess what? Same thing happens in college. 

“A lot of people go to college for 7 years…  yeah they are called doctors”  [if you don’t get my Tommy Boy reference, ignore this joke and keep reading] 

No matter how long it takes to graduate, they still proudly proclaim the year of their graduating class.. And it creates social momentum. Community. A sense of direction.

I wish someone had done this when I first started Jiu Jitsu. I probably would’ve felt way more connected to my peers I started with. Yes, I know Jiu Jitsu isn’t as systematic with belt testing, but if I would’ve had a specific black belt target date, for instance 2030, I would train more consistently and with purpose. 

Anyway…

⚡ Want to take it up a notch?

Order patches that say “Black Belt Class of 2028.” It’s a small cost for a big psychological impact.

But even if you just use a Sharpie, it works.

If you want to take this to the NEXT LEVEL, create email automations in your CRM that when a student gets a new belt, they automatically get an email with when they earn their next belt, and how far away they are from their black belt.

This keeps their short term and long term goals fresh.
