Should You Let Students Freeze for the Summer?

[Summer Retention Strategy Part 2 of 6: Be Clear on Your Freeze Policy]

Summer can mean sunshine and coffee flavored ice cream stuffed in waffle cones for some…(my favorite)

But for martial arts school owners?

Summer can feel like a dark cloud of  impending summer quits, disguised as as "we’re going to take a break."

In Part 1 of this Super Summer Series, we talked about theming your classes to make them more exciting than pool parties or Disney trips.

Today, let’s talk about something just as critical, but way less sexy: your hold/freeze policy.

Step 2: Create and Communicate a Clear Summer Hold Policy

We don’t. (At least not unless they’re literally gone the entire summer.)

Instead, we offer a credit.

✅ Going to Disney for a week or two? Awesome.

They get a credit they can use for private lessons, either before they leave or when they return.

That way:

• They don’t fall behind on their training
  
  

• They don’t waste any money
  
  

• And most importantly, they don’t break the habit of being a paying member.
  
  

Because here’s the truth:
When someone stops paying, it’s WAY harder to get them to start again.

There’s mental friction. Inertia. And a good chance they just… drift away. 

So instead of saying, “Sure, we’ll freeze your membership,”

We say:

“Great! Let’s make sure you get a credit you can use to stay on track, so Johnny doesn’t fall behind his classmates! Let’s schedule private lessons for when you get back or before you leave, that way he can stay on track with his belt promotion and not fall behind”

🎯 Pro Tip: Don’t wait until someone asks.

Bring this up before summer hits.
If you wait until they come to you, it sounds defensive.

If you bring it up now? You look insightful and professional.

Keep it simple. Be strict. And always bring it back to their child’s Black Belt journey.
