Steal Taylor Swiftโs Strategy to Stop Students From Quitting And Turn Your Students Into Raving Fans Like Swifties
Taylor Swift doesnโt have fans. She has a movement.
Her people know every lyric and every ex-boyfriend's middle name. Why?
Because they feel like she knows them. Now let me ask you thisโฆ
Do your students feel like you know them? Unless you live under a wavemaster, you probably saw the newsโฆ
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are officially engaged.
Why am I mentioning this in a martial arts newsletter?
Because even though Taylor is world famous with a bajillion fans, her fans feel connected on a personal level.
And every student that walks through your dojo door wants the same thing, they want to feel connection!
And too many martial arts schools drop the ball on this.
We talk a big game about confidence and respect (you know, the usual buzzwords), but guess what?
So do baseball and soccer.
Heck, basketball coaches now give โmat chatsโ just like we do.
In the 90s and early 2000s, saying โWe teach disciplineโ mightโve been enough. Not anymore.
So how do you actually keep students from quitting?
You remember why they started in the first place.
๐ฏ Billy joined because he was getting picked on.
๐ฏ Maya enrolled to build confidence before high school.
๐ฏ Jasonโs parents wanted him off video games and into something physical.
But after week 3? Most schools forget all that. They get caught up in class plans, stripe testing, and curriculum cycles.
The student becomes just another name on the mat.
But students donโt forget why they joined.
And if their original need isnโt being met, or even talked about, theyโll silently disappear and ghost your texts.
Hereโs what to do instead to make sure your students feel cared for personally, and not ignored right after they sign up:
I like to call it the "Why File".
Every new student should get one. Itโs a simple record of why they started. Not a generic โmore confidenceโ checkbox, I'm talking about real, personal reasons.
And your entire staff should see it regularly.
Itโs on the class card, or if you do digital check-ins, it's in the CRM. Itโs something you should talk about in meetings.

Because when your whole team knows why Sarah enrolled, they can personalize their coaching. They can check in with her about her goal. They can celebrate her wins and give her that โwow, they really careโ moment that keeps her training long-term.
๐ง Why File = Why They Stay
Action Step This Week:
If you donโt already have a way to track why students joined, create a "Why File" for each new (and current) student. Even a simple spreadsheet will do. Review it weekly with your team and find one student to talk to each day about their original goal.
Because when people feel seen, they feel a connection.
BY THE WAY- This may sound like a joke, but Iโm for real. If I were to have a name for my fans (like Taylor has Swifties), what should we call them? Tell me what you think in the comments below
