The Hidden Reason Students Quit (That Has Nothing To Do With Class Quality)
Hereโs a retention mistake I see too many good school owners make:
They deliver great classes
They build awesome relationships
They run fun events
Butโฆ slowly over time, their school starts to feelโฆ gross.
Let me explain.
When someone first joins your school, everything feels new and exciting. They love the energy, the classes, the friendships.
But if every time a Mom walks into your school she gets hit with a hurricane-force wind of dirty socks and fermenting teenager sweat... well, her excitement is going to fade fast.

Even if her child loves class, she will eventually find a reason to quit. Itโs human nature. We rarely want to spend time in places that feel dirty or run-down.
At the very least, the smell and look of your school will give her a perfect excuse to say yes the first time her child says, โI donโt want to go today.โ
๐ Whether itโs the smell when you first walk in
๐ The peeling paint on the walls
๐ The ripped mats
๐ The bathroom that clearly hasnโt been deep cleaned in a while
Donโt give parents an INTERNAL reason to quit.
Now hereโs the hard truth:
Most school owners think this isnโt a problem in THEIR school.
But you are noseblind...
You are eyeball blind to it too.
Youโve walked past those same scuffed walls and mats 1000 times.
Your students and their parents havenโt.
They see it and they feel it.
Yes, youโll have a few loyalists who will stay no matter what. But thatโs the minority. Most families are quietly making judgments every time they walk in.
So what can you do?
1๏ธโฃ Pick 3 parents you trust, the ones who will give you honest feedback.
2๏ธโฃ Give them a Dojo Excellence Audit form (Iโll give you my template if you want it).
3๏ธโฃ Ask them to walk around your school and fill it out with total honesty.
Warning: this will bruise your ego.
Youโll think โItโs not THAT bad.โ
But it is.
Then, schedule a day with your team to address what they find:
-
Replace old wavemasters or targets (sell them at a discount if you want)
-
Power wash the mats
-
Deep clean the bathrooms
-
Repaint the walls
-
Replace worn signage
-
Fix or remove anything that looks worn down
And hereโs another tip:
๐ If YOU are not naturally clean or organized, your school will not be either. Be honest with yourself. If your staff isnโt great at cleaning, thatโs OK. Donโt just get mad. Thatโs not their core job.
You wouldnโt have your instructors fix an electrical issue, so why put them in charge of keeping the school sparkling?
Hire a professional cleaner. Even if itโs just once per week for a deep clean.
And for goodnessโ sake, just because Covid is โoverโ doesnโt mean you can stop sanitizing the mats.
Bottom line:
People donโt like being in dirty spaces.
Donโt give them an excuse to leave your school because of something that is 100% in your control.
