"We wanna take a little break"
You ever get that โweโre taking a breakโ text that ruins your lunch?
โHey! Johnnyโs gonna take a break from martial arts during baseball season, don't worry weโll be back after we promise๐โ
And suddenly your lunch tastes like cardboard.
You go into โsave the studentโ mode, trying to fire off the perfect message to keep them on the mat. But more often than notโฆ itโs already too late.
And we both know, 90% of these students aren't coming back.
Hereโs the truth: most quits donโt come out of nowhere.
They follow a pattern. A season.
โ๏ธ Summer: โWeโre traveling a lot.โ
โพ Spring sports: โWeโre doing baseball this season.โ
๐ Back to school: โWeโre adjusting to the new routine.โ
And if you wait until after you get the message, youโre playing defense. Instead, I'm going to show you how to play offense.
The secret? Smell the smoke before there's a fire.
You already know what quitting season is coming up. So why not pre-frame it?
๐ง Enter their minds before they make a decision.
Letโs use baseball season as an example. Here's how you can address it now before the first โweโre taking a breakโ message hits your inbox:
-
Mat Chat Message
โRaise your hand if you play baseball or softball!โ (Hands go up.)
โThatโs awesome. Did you know martial arts helps improve your hand-eye coordination, strength, and focusโskills that make you better at all sports? Thatโs why martial arts and baseball go so well together, and you should keep training even during the seasonโ -
Parent Email Message
Let them know baseball is seasonal, but black belt is a long-term commitment. Life is busy, and learning how to manage multiple priorities is one of the best life lessons we can give kids. -
Offer Support, Not Guilt
โIf you need help adjusting your schedule, let us know, weโre here to support your family. But donโt hit pause on your goals just because life gets full. Thatโs when kids need martial arts the most.โ
Will this save every student from quitting? No.
But if it saves even a couple this season, and a few more next season, it compounds. Over time, youโll build a more consistent student base and wonโt feel like you're constantly chasing new enrollments just to stay afloat.
Be proactive, not reactive.
Anticipate the quit before it happens and youโll keep more students long-term, with less stress and fewer stomach-dropping texts.
