What Nike Can Teach Us About Running Martial Arts Schools

Letโs talk about the most dangerous killer in your martial arts school.
No, itโs not poor retention.
Itโs not low lead flow.
Itโs not even tariffs.
Itโs hesitation.
The kind that creeps into your team culture, where instructors wait to be told what to doโฆ wait for your approvalโฆ
โOh I donโt know how to do enrollments, you need to talk to the bossโ
โNeed help replacing your credit card on file? You can call later and the manager will help youโ
And by the time anything gets done, the momentโs gone.
You know who didnโt wait?
Nikeโs founder Phil Knight.
When Nike was just a startup, they didnโt have the best designs. Adidas was bigger. Reebok had flash. But Nike moved faster. They were scrappy. They tried things. They made mistakes. And they created a CULTURE of action.
Thatโs what you need to create in your team.
Because most martial arts schools donโt fail from bad ideas.
They fail from good ideas never executed. And training is never taken seriously.
๐ฅ Here's how to create an โAction Cultureโ with your team:
1. Start with Permission.
Tell your team: โYou donโt need to wait for me to fix every problem. If you see something that needs to get done, do it. If you try something and it flops, weโll fix it together. But donโt wait for me to hold your hand.โ
If they mess up? Good. Thatโs how they grow.
If they never try? Thatโs how you stay stuck.
2. Use the 1% Rule.
Ask your team at the next meeting:
โWhatโs one thing you can improve by 1% next week?โ
It could be:
-
Greet every parent by name
-
Giving students personalized feedback after class
Small improvements compound. When your team thinks โprogress,โ instead of โperfection,โ they get better. And fast.
3. Celebrate Action, Not Just Results.
If someone takes initiative, even if it flops, praise it.
Say, โHey, I saw you try something new during warm-ups. It didnโt totally land, but I love that you took the lead.โ
You want them thinking: โI get praised for trying, not punished for failing.โ
Final thought:
You want a team that acts like owners?
Then build a culture that rewards ownership.
Make your team the kind of people who Just Do It.
And of course, have the proper oversight so you know whatโs happening.
