When I Started Using This Summer Student Retention Strategy, Everything Changed

Yeahโฆ about that.
You and I both know what usually happens. The intention is there. The comeback? Not so much.
Welcome to the Summer Slump, and this monthโs Wednesday retention themed newsletters are all about how to avoid having a summer that leaves a gaping hole in your student active count. This newsletter is Step 1 out of 4. (The next ones will be released on the following Wednesdays).
Step 1: Make Summer Classes More Fun Than Their Vacation
Hereโs the truth: during the summer, youโre not just competing with other sports or activities youโre competing with Disney trips, pool parties, sleepaway camps, and โdoing nothing.โ
That means your classes canโt feel like โsame old, same old.โ

Use Weekly Themes to add energy and novelty.
You donโt need to change your entire curriculum, just spice up the last 10 minutes!
Example:
๐ Olympics Week , Students rotate through martial arts-style challenges: push-up relays, jump kick contests, long jump, whatever gets them fired up and sweaty. You can buy inexpensive metals online and give out gold, silver, and bronze throughout the week.
You want your students to brag about how fun their summer classes are, not skip them because theyโre โbusy.โ
Pro tip: Let them know all the themes BEFORE the summer begins so they know what to look forward to. Hype it up in your emails and announcements.
Parents are far less likely to take a break when their kids are saying, โCan we PLEASE go to class this week? Itโs Olympic Week!โ
BTW- this is not just for kids, adults will like it too.

Remember: students who take a break for the summer rarely come back. Donโt give them a reason to leave in the first place.
