Why Your Instructors Keep Leaving
Have you ever heard of Howard Hill?
He was a legendary archer in the 1930s, known as the โWorldโs Greatest Archer.โ
Not only could he hit a bullseye nearly every time, but he could also split an arrow he'd already shot. Thatโs how skilled he was.
But I bet you could beat Howard in a competition. Seriously, Iโd bet my life on it.
Hereโs how:
Blindfold him. Spin him around for 5 minutes. Point him in the wrong direction.
Now, set yourself up 5 feet from the target, aim, and fire.
Guess what? You win.
Why?
Because no matter how talented someone is, you canโt hit a target you canโt see.
What Does This Have to Do With Your Instructors?
Your students know their path to becoming a Black Belt. But what about your instructors?
Do they have a clear target?
Think about it:
You wouldnโt expect a student to progress without a clear belt system to follow. Yet many martial arts schools expect their instructors to grow and perform without offering them the same structure.
If you want your team to perform at their best, you need to give them levels to aim for, milestones to achieve, and recognition along the way.
1๏ธโฃ Define Instructor Levels
Just like belt levels for students, create ranks or tiers for your instructors. Each level should come with clear expectations, responsibilities, and benefits.
Example Levels:
-
Assistant Instructor: Helps in class, learns the basics of teaching.
-
Junior Instructor: Leads small portions of classes with minimal supervision.
-
Head Instructor: Manages entire classes, trains other instructors, and represents your school.
-
Program Director: Oversees enrollment, marketing, customer service, and student retention.
When your instructors know what theyโre working toward, theyโll stay motivated and see a future in your school.
2๏ธโฃ Recognize Their Progress Publicly
Imagine a student earning their Black Belt in private. It wouldnโt feel as rewarding, right?
Your team needs recognition, too. Celebrate their achievements in front of the entire school:
-
Announce promotions during a class or belt ceremony.
-
Share their success on social media.
-
Give them a special certificate or token of appreciation.
When your instructors feel seen and valued, theyโll want to grow with you.
3๏ธโฃ Create a Sense of Team Identity
Does your team feel like they belong to something bigger? One way to build that identity is through a uniform.
Consider this:
-
Matching Instructor Uniforms: Easily recognizable, professional, and unifying.
-
Instructor Patches: Visible symbols of rank that set them apart from students and show their progress.
Why This Matters
โ๏ธ Retention Beyond Students: Growth opportunities keep instructors engaged and loyal.
โ๏ธ Improved Performance: Clear goals create better leaders.
โ๏ธ Culture of Excellence: Parents and students notice when your staff is professional and aligned.
Action Step for This Week:
Write down the different roles in your school. Create a basic outline of what skills and responsibilities each level requires. Then, share it with your team and get their input.
Remember: Just like your students need a path to follow, your instructors need one, too.
As always, 3 min read, no fluff, all strategy.
