Why Your Students Might Quit This Month (and How to Stop It Before It Happens)
Itโs Wednesday, which means our Black Belt Business Newsletter theme is about retention!
Because with the new school year starting, your students (and their parents) are about to get hit with one of the biggest transitions of the year.
The kind that messes up routines. Back to school season.
And while that usually means a tick up for martial arts schools as some students flock back to classes after a summer away, it can also bring some turmoil.
New teachers.
New schools.
New bus times.
And a schedule that used to work perfectly suddenly feelsโฆ chaotic.
And when life gets busy, guess whatโs the first thing that usually gets tossed on the back burner?
Yep. Martial arts.
So how do we keep students from quitting before they even realize theyโre falling off?
We anticipate the disruption. We donโt wait for missed classes and awkward conversations. We get ahead of it.

Hereโs how:
โ Strategy #1: Bring it up before they do
This week, during announcements in class, say something like this:
โHey everyone, we know back-to-school season is a time of big transitions. If your schedule is shifting and youโre having a hard time getting to class, let us know ASAP. Weโll help you make adjustments so you donโt fall behind.โ
Then follow up 1-on-1 with the students you think might be affected the most:
โ
Adult students who are parents
โ
Kids who are entering middle school or high school
โ
Anyone who struggled with attendance last fall
If needed, offer a quick private lesson to get them caught up or review the schedule to make sure it still fits.
Donโt wait until theyโre MIA. Handle it while theyโre still in front of you.
โ Strategy #2: Make a public announcement and email blast
This one is so simple itโs often overlooked.
Send out a quick message that speaks to what people are already feeling:
"Hey martial arts familiesโฆ we know this time of year can be hectic with back-to-school transitions. Thatโs why staying consistent in your training is more important than ever. Life doesnโt stop for โฆ [want the rest of the copy and paste email you can use for your school? Comment โback to schoolโ below and iโll send it to you for free]
Thatโs the kind of message that keeps people showing up. Retention isnโt just about great classes.
Itโs about staying one step ahead of the quit. This week is your opportunity to do exactly that. Go lead your students through the chaos.
